Impact Battery FAQs
General Battery FAQ
-
What is a maintenance-free battery?Maintenance-free batteries do not require adding water or acid to activate or maintain. The correct amount of distilled water and sulfuric acid are added to the battery at the factory, and the battery is then sealed to prevent spillage and evaporation.
-
What are the advantages of a sealed battery?Sealed batteries are maintenance-free, whereas conventional or serviceable batteries may occasionally require maintenance – such as restoring proper water levels. Sealed batteries will not spill caustic electrolytes, and can therefore be mounted in most any position.
-
What is an AGM battery?AGM batteries are a sealed, maintenance-free lead-acid battery. AGM refers to the manufacturing method in which the electrolyte is suspended in a glass mat, as opposed to being in a liquid or gel state.
Battery Charger FAQ
-
Will a solar battery charger keep my battery charged?Yes, but you must match the output of the solar charger to the amount of energy you need to replace. Other considerations in determining the size of solar charger needed to restore your batteries include the amount of time the solar charger is exposed to sunlight, temperature, and the angle to the sun.
-
How often should I charge my battery?Begin by storing the battery fully charged. From there, you should charge your battery once a month, or simply store your battery connected to a smart battery charger.
Desulfation FAQ
-
What Is Sulfation?
Sulfation is the buildup of lead sulfate (PbSo4) crystals on your battery plates.
All lead acid batteries will suffer from the effects of sulfation. It is the unwanted byproduct of the natural double sulfate chemical reaction that generates electricity within the battery. When a battery is in use, the active material on your battery’s plates, lead and lead dioxide, react with the electrolyte or sulfuric acid (H2SO4) to generate electricity. During this process a thin layer of non-crystalline solid lead sulfate is deposited on the plates.
During charging, this sulfate deposit is supposed to be converted back to lead dioxide and sulfuric acid restoring the battery back to its pre-discharged state. However, the process is not perfect. Incomplete charging or prolonged time left in a discharged state will convert the amorphous (non-crystalline) lead sulfate into a hardened crystalized form diminishing the ability of the battery to reach full charge.
-
What is a Desulfator?
A desulfator is a device that when attached to a lead acid battery will clean the internal plates. They remove hardened sulfate crystals that have built up as a result of sulfation (see: What is Sulfation?). True desulfators use a pulse frequency to desolve these crystals vs. the less effective voltage pulse
-
Will My Desulfanator Charge My Battery?
Yes and No.
Generally speaking the on-board desulfanators (properly pronounced desulfators) will not charge your battery. In fact many will use your batteries power to run through its pulse phases. This will actually run down your batteries voltage to the point of being drained if the desulfator has no built in auto shutoff. Some only operate when they detect current from your battery charger and work in conjunction with the charger.
The battery charger desulfators are a smart charger and a desulfator built into one unit. And yes these will charge or maintain your battery at full charge.
ATV Battery FAQ
-
What kind of battery should I use for my winch? For applications that require one battery to handle starting and deep cycle usage – such as winches, lights and other accessories used when the engine is not running – choose a battery with highest storage amps and cold cranking amps – and capable of being deeply discharged without damage. Odyssey batteries are often a great choice for such applications. When using a battery dedicated to accessories such as a winch, choose a deep cycle battery.
-
Do I need to charge my new ATV battery before installing?ATV batteries arrive charged and ready to install.
-
Should I disconnect my ATV battery during storage? If you know you won't be using your ATV battery for a long period of time, it is best to disconnect the battery and store it in a dry cool place. Ideally, batteries should be stored connected to a smart battery charger – or charged occasionally – to maintain optimal performance.

Household Battery FAQ
-
Can I recharge alkaline batteries? Most common household alkaline batteries are single use and should not be placed in a battery charger, though a few alkaline batteries are designed to be recharged. Recharging single-use batteries is extremely dangerous without the proper equipment. Even with the proper equipment, recharging a single use battery will not produce the power or performance of a battery designed to be recharged.
-
What is the difference between a disposable and rechargeable battery?Disposable batteries, also called single use or primary batteries, are designed to be used once and discarded when the energy has been completely drained. Rechargeable batteries, also called secondary batteries, can be drained and recharged multiple times before losing the ability to hold a charge.
Marine Battery FAQ
-
Do I need to charge my new marine battery before installing?Sealed marine batteries arrive charged and ready to install. Conventional marine batteries require adding water or acid, and charging before use.
-
Should I disconnect my marine batteries during storage? If you know you won't be using your marine batteries for a long period of time, it is best to disconnect the battery and store it in a dry cool place.
