Resource to Find the Correct Power Wheels Battery

Finding the correct Power Wheels replacement part can be tricky.

Mattel has made both 6V and 12V Power Wheels toys dating back to the 1980's. During that span there have been several recalls and countless variations of the most popular toys including the iconic Power Wheels Jeep and Jeep Wrangler.

The recalls and re-making of these toys mean your Jeep, for example, could take one of four different batteries (at one point there were 6 different batteries).

We hope to guide you to the right Power Wheels replacement battery through our various articles and info below.

Replacement Power Wheels Battery

Power Wheels could not exist without the name Barbie. Nearly every toy—from toddlers to those in grade school—has been made with a Barbie theme. This can lead to trouble when replacing the battery.

The Barbie Jeep, for example, could take 1 of 4 different batteries.

Confusion with Peg Perego

We currently have two articles comparing or pertaining to mistakes we have seen regarding these ride-on-toy rivals.

Power Wheels is the 800-pound gorilla in the space. So, it is no surprise that search queries unknowingly mix manufacturer specific terms together.

Grey vs. Orange Top Battery

We get asked regularly what the difference is between the fully grey colored and grey with orange top 12V batteries. Or sometimes the question may be, "Can I use the orange top battery instead of the solid grey colored battery?" or vice versa.

Aside from the color differentiation there is no difference in the battery voltage or amperage. They are both 12-volt batteries. They both have a 12-amp hour capacity rating. They both use the same connector and charger.

The only material difference is that the orange top battery (model 00801-1776) has a 40A breaker vs the original 30A breaker used in the all grey colored Power Wheels battery (model 00801-0638 or 1001175653).

If your toy came with the orange top battery, then it is best NOT to buy the all grey version as the toy draws more power and will trip the internal breaker.

If your toy came with the all grey colored battery you need to stick with the same all grey colored version.

Safety Recalls

Has your toy been recalled? We can help you find the correct Power Wheels replacement part.

Several of the recalls involved the battery and/or the wiring harness assembly. If not fixed, they could cause a fire!

The battery related recalls were all on older ride-on-toy that use a 6V battery.

The green colored battery with 'H' type connector is one you need to take seriously. Those toys can be upgraded to the red colored battery with the 'A' type connector.

Call Mattel at 800-348-0751 to confirm if your toy is safe to use. Depending on the situation, they may be able to refer you to an Authorized Service Center, such as Impact Battery, to have the toy fixed.

If it is no longer serviceable they will offer you $35 to take it a Power Wheels Service Center to dispose of the toy.
