XTAX14AHL-BS vs. GTZ14S-3

More Frustration for Honeywell Generator Owners

For those of you that own a Honeywell Portable Electric Generator and think you need a XTAX14AHL-BS replacement battery—STOP and READ This Important Finding! We have had several customers call and share their frustration over issues finding the correct generator battery. We thought the issue was limited to the GTZ14S Generator Battery Dilemma, which we wrote about July 16th 2015. However, Honeywell portable generator owners have notated another issue that involves the Xtreme XTAX14AHL-BS.

There are two issues in play for you proud Honeywell generator owners. First, the service manual is wrong! It appears Honeywell uses a combined manual for the 3000W to 7500W units. We have not been able to confirm every model depicted has this issue, but know for certain the 7000W generator is affected. On page 32 there were two recommended replacement batteries for Honeywell part number 101536A.

Recommended Battery Replacement Found in Service Manual:
Xtreme XTAX14AHL-BS
Yuasa 12N14-3A

The XTAX14AHL-BS is a dry charge maintenance free upgrade for the old wet conventional Yuasa 12N14-3A battery. Based on dimensions, both batteries listed can be used to replace each other. Our Moto Classic YTX14AHL sealed AGM battery would also be a drop in replacement as it measures the same 5.28 x 3.5 x 6.54 (LWH). Everything within the instructional booklet seems to be in order thus far, right?

Wrong! If the battery pulled from the generator actually matched what was in the manual we would not be writing this blog post now would we?

It’s a GTZ14S-3 Instead of XTAX14AHL-BS

The battery pulled from the Honeywell generators measures 5.94 x 3.43 x 4.13 (LWH). These are the same dimensions as the GTZ14S dilemma we talked about in July. The only difference is that the part number listed is GTZ14S-3. Which, for someone who knows batteries, makes them stop and think. Why is there a dash 3 on the end? That is not normal.

Upon further investigation you quickly discover this dash 3 is trying to signify that the GTZ14S-3 is a non-standardized JIS battery. It has reverse polarity—the negative is on the left instead of the right side.

MotoBatt MBTX9U to the Rescue!

Once again the only viable replacement option seems to be the MotoBatt MBTX9U which has the QuadFlex terminal structure. The size and polarity match the GTZ14S-3 battery. All MotoBatt generator and power sport batteries come with a full 2 year replacement warranty.
