GoPro cameras are becoming increasing popular with motorcyclists, and they are great for getting some fantastic shots at any speed. However, many people are perplexed when it comes to deciding the best location for mounting this type of camera. No single answer is best for everyone. It is simply a matter of taste, and fortunately, the GoPro 5 and the GoPro HD cameras include full installation kits for mounting the cameras in a number of different positions on any motorcycle.

Mounting Preparations

Although the mounting kits available with most GoPro cameras work extremely well, some riders have discovered that they can receive even greater versatility with third-party mounting arms. While these are not necessary, flexible arms do allow for some creative mounting positions, and since the camera is wireless, it can be manipulated or extended without any hassles. The only drawback is that some riders like to have the GoPro within arm’s reach so that the push-button controls can be accessed.

Handlebar Mounting

When it comes to mounting a GoPro camera on the handlebars of a motorcycle, riders have a choice of three positions: top mount, bottom mount and cockpit mount. The top-mount position is the most popular and one of the easiest ways to mount this camera. Some motorcyclists prefer to use a mounting arm with a top mount, but it is not necessary. The arm, however, allows the camera to be positioned at eye level while being far enough away that it does not create a distraction.

A GoPro can also be mounted from the bottom of a handlebar. This gives the rider a great shot that includes the front wheel and the road underneath. Alternatively, the camera can be mounted in a rear-facing direction to provide a shot of the rider and the road just travelled.

Another handlebar position is known as the cockpit mount. To mount the GoPro in this position, it is secured to the center of the handlebars and aimed so that the gauges can be seen on the bottom of the shot while providing a clear view of what’s ahead.

Side Mounting

Like handlebar mounting, side mounting can be achieved in several ways. One of the most common side mounts is from the crash bar. Crash-bar mounting cannot be achieved with the standard kit, so the expanded kit or a third-party attachment is required. This position provides a low-angle shot of the road, which creates the illusion of increased speed.

A second option for side mounting is to attach the camera to one of the foot pegs. This is especially convenient for those who do not frequently ride with passengers. The only thing to watch for is that the camera is high enough to avoid contact with the ground on turns.

Rear Mounting

Riders who like to take the lead may want to mount a GoPro camera from the rear of the motorcycle to capture friends who are riding behind them. Several rear-mounting spots are available near the back fender. One great idea is to mount a camera from each of the saddlebag positions. One camera can be set for video while the other captures photos every two seconds.
