How to Replace the Battery in a Razor Scooter

Since their introduction in 2003, Razor electric scooters have captivated children of all ages. The eco-friendly devices are a fun and affordable way to make brief trips. In addition to being popular recreational toys for children, some adults in urban settings use the scooters to commute to work or run errands.
Proper Battery Maintenance
Most models are equipped with two 12-volt, rechargeable, sealed lead-acid batteries. Each unit has an Underwriters Laboratory, or UL, approved battery charger as well. You must properly charge your Razor scooter battery to get the best range between charges. Proper charging techniques will also extend the life of the device. After extended use of your scooter, remember to turn it off and charge the battery for at least 8 hours. You can prolong the life of your battery by disconnecting it if you do not plan to ride your scooter on a regular basis. Storing a Razor scooter battery below 50 degrees Fahrenheit or allowing it to fully discharge will cause it to lose its ability to hold a charge. If this occurs, you must replace the batteries.
Remove the Defective Battery
Position your scooter on a level surface, and turn it off. Ensure that the scooter is a safe distance from open flames and other sources of heat. Locate the four screws that secure the riding platform to the scooter frame. Use a cross tip screwdriver to loosen and remove these screws. You can remove the two hex bolts with a 4-mm Allen wrench and the two lock nuts with an 8-mm open wrench. After you remove these fasteners, place them inside a container with a lid so that they will be readily available when it is time to reassemble the scooter. Lift the riding platform, and set it aside. The Razor scooter battery pack should now be visible.
Locate the accessory wire that is attached to each battery, and trace their path until you reach the white plug-in connectors, which secure the batteries to the wiring harness. Press the tabs that are located on the side of the connector, and remove the connector from the wiring harness. Repeat this process for the second connector as well. If the scooter is equipped with a battery bracket, unfasten the screws that secure it in place. Remove the batteries from the compartment and dispose of them in accordance with your local regulations. Contact your battery retailer for a compatible replacement for your particular model.
Install the New Battery
Place the new Razor scooter battery inside the compartment. Ensure that it is positioned flat on the bottom of the compartment. Reattach the batteries to the wiring harness by pushing the two halves of the white plug-in connectors back together. Replace the battery bracket and riding platform that you removed earlier, and secure the components with the screws, bolts and lock nuts. Check the battery manufacturer’s instructions to determine how long you should charge the device before riding the scooter.
